Airbus: contract for military satellite in UK
(CercleFinance.com) - Airbus has been awarded a contract to design and build a new satellite system for the British Army, worth £127m (approx.
E152m).
The British Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on Monday that the new system, dubbed 'Oberon', would comprise two Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) aircraft.
It will capture images of the Earth's surface by day and night, to enhance the UK's intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.
The system will be designed and produced in the UK, says the British government, with the aim of supporting some 200 jobs at Airbus sites based in Stevenage and Portsmouth.
Its launch is scheduled for 2027.
