Air France-KLM: 250 layoffs planned at KLM
(CercleFinance.com) - KLM airline, the Dutch subsidiary of the Air France-KLM group, announced on Wednesday that it plans to lay off 250 of its staff as part of its cost-cutting plan unveiled last October.
In a press release, KLM says it has informed its staff representative bodies of its planned headcount reductions, which are to relate to 'non-operational' roles.
It is crucial for our future that we succeed in structurally reducing our costs, which means taking some difficult decisions, CEO Marjan Rintel said.
Amongst these measures is a reduction in the number of non-operational positions, for which we will avoid forced redundancies, although we cannot rule this out in advance, he added.
Last October, KLM implemented a series of measures aimed at improving its operational and financial performance against a backdrop of rising costs.
It aims to achieve an improvement in annual operating income of up to E450m.
To this end, KLM has had to delay the construction of its new head office and postpone two building projects dedicated to its engineering and maintenance activities.
The company has also implemented a number of initiatives to increase productivity by at least 5% and improve profitability.
On the Paris Bourse, Air France-LM shares were up 0.3% on Wednesday morning, compared with a market down 0.4%, in the wake of these announcements.
