Thales: launches QKD-GEO project with Hispasat
(CercleFinance.com) - Thales Alenia Space and Hispasat announce the launch of the development, manufacturing, verification and validation phase of the prototype of QKD-GEO, the Spanish quantum key distribution system from geostationary orbit.
With a budget of E103.5m, QKD-GEO represents the world's most advanced civilian project in this field, aiming to produce secure ground-orbit communication keys that even the most powerful quantum computers will not be able to hack.
This disruptive technology is set to offer a whole new paradigm in secure information and communication, based on the quantum properties of photons - a first step towards the quantum internet of the future.
Under this contract, managed by the Spanish CDTI, Thales Alenia Space will lead an industrial consortium of Spanish and European companies, within which Hispasat will be responsible for designing the geostationary mission and defining the business plan.
