BASF: geothermal energy agreement with Vulcan ER

(CercleFinance.com) - Vulcan Energy Resources and BASF announce that they have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the use of geothermal energy at the Ludwigshafen chemical site (Germany).

This strategic partnership aims to use natural heat from deep geothermal sources to provide renewable energy to meet BASF's core energy needs, while involving the towns of Frankenthal and Ludwigshafen.

The project could generate 300 MW of thermal energy, producing 4 million tonnes of fossil fuel-free steam annually, reducing CO₂ emissions by 800,000 tonnes.

At the same time, the project could provide low-carbon district heating through collaboration with local suppliers.

The next step is a seismic survey as early as 2025 to explore geothermal potential.
