Vinci: to extend Chicago subway

(CercleFinance.com) - The Chicago Transit Authority has selected the consortium of Vinci Construction Grands Projets (40%) and Chicago-based Walsh Construction Company (60%) to build the extension to the Red Line subway system.

The contract, worth $2.78bn (E2.49bn), covers the design and construction of a 9 km extension to the line, including a 6.4 km overhead section. It also includes the construction of four new stations, fully accessible to people with reduced mobility.

This extension aims to serve disadvantaged communities on Chicago's Far South Side.

10% of design hours and 35% of construction hours will be allocated to people from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods in Chicago.

15% of construction hours will be carried out by apprentices and trainees, and 22% of purchases will be made from local VSEs and SMEs.

In terms of environmental commitment, the design optimizations proposed by the consortium will reduce the quantity of concrete used in the infrastructure by 14%. In addition, 50% of the concrete used will be low-carbon.
