Thales: Telespazio selected by Italian Space Agency

(CercleFinance.com) - Telespazio, a joint venture between Leonardo (67%) and Thales (33%), has been chosen by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) to extend the capabilities of its Deep Space Antenna Station (SDSA), located in Sardinia.

Under the terms of the contract, Telespazio will be responsible for upgrading the station's facilities, including the installation of new X-, Ka- and K-band cryocoolers.

The project will enable the ASI to develop its space research infrastructures for both deep space (more than two million km from Earth) and nearer space (less than two million km).

In particular, the aim is to prepare for possible human or robotic exploration missions, as well as scientific lunar missions.

ASI's deep-space antenna, based at San Basilio, not far from Cagliari, has hitherto shared its astronomy resources with the telescope of the Institut National d'Astrophysique (INAF).

With this contract, SDSA will have access to the latest-generation equipment, which it will be the only one to use.
