Stellantis: UAW mobilizes in Belvidere (Illinois)

(CercleFinance.com) - Today the UAW, the powerful US automobile union, plans to demonstrate in front of the Belvidere (Illinois) plant to oppose Stellantis' decision to postpone the reopening of the site.

According to media reports, the automotive group yesterday confirmed its intention to postpone the project, notably following disappointing first-half results which led it to promise the market to adopt a 'more aggressive' economic approach.

In view of the current weakness of demand in North America, this orientation should push the automaker to lower its prices in order to reduce its inventories, analysts warn.

The UAW calls on Stellantis to "respect its commitments" made during last year's tough negotiations, pointing out that the agreement reached was binding in nature.

They say they want to 'postpone' the plan to reopen the assembly site, but their real intention is to stall until the agreement we have reached expires, at which point they will be able to invoke 'market conditions' again and never reopen the plant, UAW President Shawn Fain says.

The trade unionist finds it "pathetic" that the group resorts to the use of the term 'market conditions' in order to avoid having to keep its promises.

It's always about 'market conditions' when it comes to harming a worker or closing a plant. On the other hand, 'market conditions' are never mentioned when the CEO's salary is increased by 56%, he adds.
