Safran: selected for Boeing's 'X-66' project
(CercleFinance.com) - Safran announced Tuesday that it has been selected by Boeing to supply an electrical power generation system for a flight demonstrator project with NASA.
The program, dubbed 'X-66' and launched in partnership with NASA, aims to develop the technologies needed to achieve zero CO2 emissions in commercial aviation.
It is based in particular on a concept of slim wings designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions on future single-aisle aircraft.
The electrical generation system designed by Safran is to comprise a variable-frequency generator and associated control electronics, adapted for direct integration on a Pratt & Whitney engine with an electrical power rating of over 100 kW.
Safran has also been asked to provide support for ground and flight tests, scheduled to begin in 2028.
Also at the Farnborough Airshow, Safran announced that Danish leasing company Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC) had placed an order for ten Leap-1A engines to power five aircraft in the Airbus A321neo family.
The agreement includes options for two additional A321neo aircraft, also powered by Leap engines.
