Meta: new concerns about 'pay or consent'
(CercleFinance.com) - The European Commission reports that the Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) network has voiced concerns that Meta's pay or consent model could infringe EU consumer legislation.
The subject has been closely monitored since 2023 by the Commission and the DGCCRF (Direction générale de la Concurrence, de la Consommation et de la Répression des Fraudes) after Meta asked consumers to subscribe, for a fee, to use Facebook and Instagram or consent to the use of their personal data.
The Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) network is concerned that many consumers may have been exposed to undue pressure to quickly choose between the two models (Pay or Consent), fearing immediate loss of access to their accounts and contact network.
This coordinated action by the CPC network against Meta is in addition to other ongoing proceedings at EU and national level concerning the same model.
