BASF: to close two German GA production sites

(CercleFinance.com) - BASF plans to end production of the active ingredient glufosinate-ammonium (GA) at its Knapsack and Frankfurt (Germany) sites by the end of the year, citing economic reasons.

Both facilities are scheduled to close in 2025.

The company states that, despite cost reductions, its competitiveness and profitability in GA production are insufficient in the face of growing competition from generic manufacturers and high energy and raw material costs.

BASF therefore plans to source GA from third-party suppliers in future to secure its competitiveness.

Jobs will be maintained until the end of 2025, after which they will be gradually reduced.

BASF says it is working on the development of 'next-generation' GA alternatives.
