Volkswagen: battery agreement with QuantumScape
(CercleFinance.com) - Volkswagen announced on Thursday that its battery subsidiary PowerCo had signed an agreement with QuantumScape to produce on an industrial scale the solid electrolyte batteries designed by the American company.
Under the terms of this non-exclusive agreement, QuantumScape will grant PowerCo, subject to certain technical conditions and in return for the payment of royalties, a license to mass-produce cells based on its technology platform.
On an operational level, PowerCo's production capacity based on QuantumScape's processes could reach 40 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year, or up to 80 GWh, equivalent to the power needed to power one million vehicles a year.
VW, which has been working with QuantumScape since 2012, is one of the start-up's main investors.
The automaker says it is fully convinced of the solid-state cell, which it believes could lead to significant autonomy, recharge very quickly and all this with virtually no wear and tear.
