ABB: aims to revolutionise marine propulsion with Dynafin
(CercleFinance.com) - ABB yesterday unveiled ABB Dynafin, a revolutionary new propulsion concept for the marine industry.
Inspired by the dynamic movements of a whale's tail, the innovative concept is the result of more than a decade of R&D and testing, and its first prototype is expected by 2025.
This new propulsion concept comprises a main electric motor powering a large wheel turning at a moderate rate of 30 to 80 revolutions per minute.
Vertical blades, each controlled by an individual motor and control system, extend from the wheel.
The combined movement of the wheel and blades simultaneously generates propulsion and steering forces.
Initially available in the power range of 1 to 4 MW per unit, the new propulsion concept is particularly effective for medium-sized and smaller vessels, including passenger and vehicle ferries, offshore support vessels operating in wind farms and yachts.
