
Disney: 'The Little Mermaid' streets ahead at US box office
(CercleFinance.com) - "The Little Mermaid" has dominated the North American box-office in recent days, grossing over $95m in its first weekend of release.
According to data from Box Office Mojo, the film was well ahead of "Fast X", the tenth opus in the Fast & Furious saga produced by Universal, which took in $23m.
The film, a CGI remake of the 1989 cartoon, was produced by Disney on a budget estimated at around $250m.
Including international box-office receipts, it has already grossed over $185m.
Directed by Rob Marshall - whose credits include an episode of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise - the film follows Ariel, a young mermaid drawn to the terrestrial world, who falls under the spell of Prince Eric.
