Pfizer: skin disease drug gets FDA's 'breakthrough' status

(CercleFinance.com) - US biopharmaceutical giant Pfizer said on Wednesday that US regulators have given breakthrough therapy status to a treatment of patients with alopecia areata, a chronic autoimmune skin disease that causes hair loss on the scalp, face, or body.

The FDA's decision was supported by positive results from a Phase 2 study, which will be presented at the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology Congress in Paris on 15 September, the company said.

There are no FDA-approved treatments for alopecia areata, which affects millions of people worldwide.
