GE: wins contract for Sofia wind farm in North Sea

(CercleFinance.com) - GE Renewable Energy's Grid Solutions and Sembcorp Marine have been awarded a comprehensive contract to supply a high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system for Sofia, one of the world's largest offshore wind farm projects, GE reported today.

The contract includes the design, manufacture, installation, commissioning and maintenance of the conversion platforms and all ancillary equipment.

As part of the contract, Grid Solutions will lead the consortium in the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of the system's two HVDC converter stations (onshore and offshore) capable of transmitting 1,320 megawatts (MW) of power at 320 kilovolts (kV).

Once operational, the Sofia offshore wind farm in the North Sea will be able to generate enough renewable energy to meet the electricity needs of around 1.2 million average UK households.

Construction of the wind farm is due to start this year at GE's Teesside site, with offshore construction expected to begin in 2023. Teesside will also be home to GE Renewable Energy's new blade manufacturing facility.
