Amazon: selected for 'cloud' by Israeli government

(CercleFinance.com) - US tech giants Amazon and Google have been selected to provide cloud services to the Israeli government as part of the first phase of a massive project called "Nimbus," the country's Ministry of Finance announced on Wednesday.

The contract - which involves the creation of local cloud sites to process and store government data within the state's borders - is estimated to be worth about 1.2 billion dollars.

Amazon and Google beat some of their biggest US rivals in the bidding process, including Microsoft, Oracle and IBM.

The "Nimbus" project, a first in the country, aims to provide a complete cloud services solution to the government, defense system and other economic organizations.

It has four components: government policy formulation, cloud migration, integration, cloud migration and business control and optimization implementation.

Amazon also announced Wednesday that its Amazon Web Services (AWS) subsidiary has been selected by cable operator DISH Network as the preferred provider of cloud infrastructure to support the launch of its 5G network.
