Alfa Laval: joins marine players to use green fuels

(CercleFinance.com) - Alfa Laval, which makes heat recovery generators and water treatment systems, is teaming up with marine industry players to use green fuels to generate electricity.

The Swedish engineering firm has said that it has joined a project with DTU Energy, Haldor Topsoe, Svitzer and the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller research center to accelerate the development of solid oxide fuel cells.

Alfa Laval said it will head the project, aiming to find scalable solutions for non-carbon fuels for the shipping industry.

The initiative will focus on the use of ammonia, hydrogen and bio-methane for power production onboard marine vessels, it said.

The move comes as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) targets a 50% reduction of vessel-related greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
