ArcelorMittal: partnership on CO2 capture
(CercleFinance.com) - ArcelorMittal today announced a partnership with Sekisui Chemical in a project to capture and reuse CO2 from steelmaking.
In addition to contributing to the decarbonisation of the steel production process, this project could also reduce ArcelorMittal's dependence on fossil resources.
Indeed, once captured, the CO2 will be partly converted into synthesis gas, a highly efficient carbon monoxide, via an innovative chemical process developed by Sekisui Chemical in Japan. The gas will then be used in the steelmaking process
While the production of carbon monoxide in large quantities from CO2 has proved very difficult to date, Sekisui Chemical intends to demonstrate its ability to scale up its new technology through this partnership, ArcelorMittal says.
The technology will be tested from the third quarter for a period of three years in one of ArcelorMittal's R&D labs in Spain.
