WH Smith: appoints Carl Cowling as new CEO

(CercleFinance.com) - Alongside its quarterly trading update, British newspaper and book retailer WH Smith has appointed Carl Cowling to succeed Stephen Clarke as chief executive, as from November.


Carl Cowling is currently managing director of the WH Smith high street unit, the group's town centre store business.

Prior to joining WH Smith, Carl spent his entire career in the retail industry, first at British electronics retailer Dixons and then at mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse.

According to UBS analysts, the CEO change is "unlikely to be much of a concern given the successful long-term trading strategy."
