bp: to start green hydrogen project with Denmark's Orsted

(CercleFinance.com) - bp and Danish energy company Orsted said they have signed a letter of intent to work together to develop a project for industrial-scale production of green hydrogen, which is made by the electrolysis of water using renewable power, thereby producing no CO2 emissions.


In their proposed project, the companies intend to build an initial 50 megawatt (MW) electrolyser and associated infrastructure at bp's Lingen refinery in north-west Germany.

The plant will be powered by renewable energy generated by an Orsted offshore wind farm in the North Sea and the hydrogen produced will be used in the refinery.

bp and Orsted said they still have to work together to further define the project, although the companies expect the project to be operational by 2024.
