Rio Tinto: 25% of haul trucks fleet now autonomous

(CercleFinance.com) - Rio Tinto's autonomous fleet represented about a quarter of the total material moved across its Australia's Pilbara iron-ore mines in 2017, the global miner said on Monday.

On average, each autonomous truck was estimated to have operated about 700 hours more than conventional haul trucks, the company said.

More importantly, there have been no injuries attributed to autonomous haul trucks since deployment, Rio Tinto said.

The mining giant said it now plans to add more autonomous Komatsu and Caterpillar haul trucks to its fleet over the next two years.
