Renault: makes inroads into energy storage projects

(CercleFinance.com) - At the Renault eWays event, which is dedicated to current and future electric mobility, the French car maker is presenting new tangible solutions for energy management by initiating two major projects in Europe using second-life battery technologies.

More specifically, the group announces the commissioning of the first "Advanced Battery Storage" (ABS), in Douai, with a total capacity of 4.7MWh. Designed using electric car batteries compiled in containers, ABS will enable stationary energy storage in order to stabilise the electrical network. The idea is simple: batteries are charged when demand on the grid is low, while energy is fed back into the grid as soon as demand increases.

Renault is also presenting the SmartHubs project, developed with Connected Energy in West Sussex, UK. Second life batteries from Renault vehicles will be used alongside other technologies as part of a local energy system to provide cleaner and cheaper energy for social housing, transport, infrastructure, private homes and local businesses.

Both projects have a common goal: better manage the gaps in energy efficiency between electricity consumption and production in order to increase the share of renewable energies in the energy mix.
