Thales: water-based propulsion project for satellites

(CercleFinance.com) - On Tuesday Thales Alenia Space announced that it is teaming up with the Italian start-up Miprons to develop a water-based space propulsion system.

The joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%) says it has signed an agreement with Miprons to design a propulsion system for satellites using a proprietary micro-thruster technology.

The electrolysis process, for which the Italian patent is being filed in 49 other countries, breaks down water into hydrogen and oxygen, which are then fed into the combustion chamber.

This system, designed specifically for Thales Alenia Space satellites, will allow for faster manoeuvres such as positioning, de-orbiting and collision avoidance.

Thales shares are "flying high" on this news - up about 2.5%, significantly beating the downbeat market in Paris (-0.5%).
