Thales: to build two satellites for SES

(CercleFinance.com) - Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), has signed a contract with operator SES to supply two Ku-band geostationary satellites - ASTRA 1P and ASTRA 1Q.

These satellites will carry the content of SES' major European broadcasters and provide connectivity services across Europe.

ASTRA 1P will strengthen SES' leading TV position and enable private and public content owners and broadcasters in Germany, Spain and France to supply satellite TV channels with the highest image quality.

ASTRA 1Q will be able to support direct-to-home (DTH) operations similar to those of ASTRA 1P. This fully flexible satellite will be customisable in-orbit and easily redeployable to other orbital positions, so that SES will be able to meet the evolving needs of its video and data customers for years to come, the group said.

Thales shares are currently up 1%, while SES shares are down about 1%.
