Carrefour: Finance Minister says no to Couche-Tard offer

(CercleFinance.com) - Bruno Le Maire, the Minister of the Economy, Finance and Recovery, reiterated his opposition to the merger between Canada's Couche-Tard and the French food retailer Carrefour, this Friday 15 January, when he was invited for an interview on the Bourdin Direct show, on the RMC radio station.

A few days ago, the minister said that a priori, he was not in favour of the operation, this time round he stepped up his tone, opposing it with a courteous, although clear and final no.

The food safety of our country is at stake, he argued, and this has no price. Therefore, we are not selling off the biggest French retailer.

Referring to the decree on foreign investment in France and its extension to all food retail activities, the minister pointed out that he had a legal instrument at his disposal, specifying that it would be used if necessary.

After these announcements, Carrefour shares are down almost 4% in Paris.
