Siemens: joint project with Evonik in green chemistry

(CercleFinance.com) - Siemens plans to work with German specialty chemicals maker Evonik on a joint research project to produce "green" chemistry, the companies said on Thursday.

In the two-year "Rheticus" project, both companies will collaborate on electrolysis and fermentation processes to convert carbon dioxide (CO2) into specialty chemicals.

Some 20 scientists are currently involved in the project.

In the run, a first test plant is expected to go on stream by 2021 at a German Evonik facility which produces chemicals such as butanol and hexanol, both feedstocks for special plastics and food supplements.

The next stage could see a plant with a production capacity of up to 20,000 tonnes a year, the companies said.
