Novartis: acquires one of GSK's antibiotics businesses

(CercleFinance.com) - Sandoz, a division of Novartis, has signed an agreement to acquire GSK's cephalosporin antibiotics business, thereby strengthening its position as a global leader in the field of antibiotics.


The agreement includes the worldwide rights to three established brands (Zinnat, Zinacef and Fortum) in over 100 markets. In 2020, these three brands had combined sales of approximately 140 million dollars in the relevant markets, Novartis said.

However, the group points out that the US, Australian and German markets are not concerned by the agreement, as the rights have already been transferred by GSK, as have rights in India, Pakistan, Egypt and Japan for some of the three brands. GSK will also retain the rights to the Chinese market.

As part of the agreement, Sandoz will pay GSK 350 million dollars and additional milestone payments of up to 150 million dollars.

The Novartis share is up very slightly on Thursday afternoon, while the GSK share is down about 1%.
