Barrick Gold: is merger with Newmont still on the cards?

(CercleFinance.com) - Towards a new major concentration - amongst gold miners? According to several press sources, including the Canadian newspaper Globe & Mail and Bloomberg, the Canadian Barrick Gold is rumoured to be considering taking over its US competitor, Newmont Mining.


According to Bloomberg, Barrick has "spent time" studying the "feasibility" of such a deal over recent months. The Canadian group is considering a joint offer with Australia's Newcrest Mining.
According to Globe & Mail, a hostile takeover bid could be made.

In US dollars, the market capitalisations of Barrick Gold, Newmont Mining and Newcrest Mining are respectively 24 billion dollars, 19 billion dollars and 14 billion dollars.
