Telefonica: appointment of a new Chief Operating Officer

(CercleFinance.com) - Telefonica announced Thursday the appointment of Emilio Gayo as Chief Operating Officer, replacing Angel Vila who had held the position since 2017.

Emilio Gayo, who has 30 years' experience in the sector, had joined Telefonica in 2004 as head of international operations for Telefonica Moviles, the branch that then grouped the telecom operator's cell phone activities.

Since 2018, he had been managing director of Telefonica Spain, the group's Spanish subsidiary.

In his new role, Gayo will be in charge of activities in Spain, Brazil, Spain and the UK, as well as B2B-related businesses, the Telefonica Tech division linked to digital businesses, the Telefonica Infra infrastructure subsidiary and also the cloud subsidiary (gCTIO).

This promotion is part of a broader management reshuffle, which follows the recent appointment of Marc Murtra as Executive Chairman.

With less than an hour to go before the close of trading on the Madrid stock exchange, Telefonica shares were up 0.8% on Thursday, compared with a 0.1% rise for the IBEX 35 index.
