Merck: towards preventive HIV care with the Gates Foundation
(CercleFinance.com) - Merck today announced a collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
As part of this collaboration, the Foundation has committed to fund a pivotal Phase 3 study of islatravir as an HIV prevention treatment for high-risk women and adolescent girls in sub-Saharan Africa.
Over half of the world's HIV infections are concentrated in the region, and 60% of those infected are women.
The IMPOWER 22 study, which will evaluate the efficacy and safety of islatravir, is scheduled to begin in early 2021 and will involve 4,500 trans women and adolescent girls between the ages of 16 and 45, Merck said.
