Caterpillar: maintains outlook after record third-quarter

(CercleFinance.com) - Caterpillar, the world's largest maker of building equipment, posted record third-quarter EPS, and maintained its earnings outlook for full-year 2018.

On Tuesday, the Deerfield (Illinois) based company said that its third-quarter earnings rose to 2.88 dollars per share, from 1.77 dollars per share a year ago.

Caterpillar said sales and revenues totalled 13.5 billion dollars, compared with 11.4 billion dollars in the third quarter of 2017, up 18%.

But the company maintained its 2018 EPS outlook range of 10.65 dollars to 11.65 dollars, with adjusted EPS expected between 11 dollars and 12 dollars.

Regarding business, Caterpillar said that most end markets are continuing to improve, with order rates and backlog remaining "healthy."

As for the fourth quarter, price control, operational performance and cost discipline are expected to more than offset higher material and freight costs, including tariffs, it added.
