Amazon: EU sends new objections to marketplace platform

(CercleFinance.com) - Europe's competition regulator has sent Amazon a formal list of concerns relating to its business as a marketplace service provider, opening a second investigation into its e-commerce practices.

The European Commission, the EU's top antitrust regulator, said that it has sent a so-called "statement of objections" to the US online giant.

The Commission pointed out that Amazon uses non-public business data of independent sellers who sell on its marketplace, so as to benefit its own retail business, which directly competes with these very third party sellers.

The executive arm of the EU said that Amazon has access to data such as the number of ordered and shipped units of products, the sellers' revenues on the marketplace, or the number of visits to sellers' offers.

This data then flows directly into automated systems, enabling Amazon to calibrate its retail offers, for example by focusing its offers on the best-selling products and adjusting its deals consequently, the Commission said.
