Activision Blizzard: EU clears its acquisition by Microsoft
(CercleFinance.com) - The European Commission has announced that it has cleared the Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
The approval is, however, conditional on full compliance with the commitments offered by Microsoft, which fully address the competition concerns identified by the Commission and represent a significant improvement for cloud gaming compared to the current situation.
After an in-depth investigation, the Commission found that Microsoft could derive competitive benefits from the transaction, in particular regarding the distribution of games via cloud streaming services and that its position in the PC operating system market would be strengthened.
In response, Microsoft has given a 10-year commitment to enable, via free licenses, the streaming of these games into any cloud-based game streaming service.
Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice President for Competition Policy says that Microsoft's commitments will strengthen competition and growth opportunities.
