Airbus: launches a satellite for SpaceDataHighway
(CercleFinance.com) - The EDRS-C satellite of the SpaceDataHighway network (also known as EDRS) will be launched on 24 July 2019 by an Ariane 5 rocket.
This second satellite will join EDRS-A, which transmits daily images of the Earth acquired by the four Sentinel observation satellites of the Copernicus program.
SpaceDataHighway is sort of the first "fiber optic" network in space. It is a single network with a throughput of 1.8 gigabit/s consisting of satellites in geostationary orbit and a network of ground stations.
In 2019, the system will begin to provide a 100%-European broadband communication service for the Columbus module of the ISS, the international space station.
The SpaceDataHighway system was developed as part of a public-private partnership between the European Space Agency (ESA) and Airbus. The group owns, operates and provides the commercial service of SpaceDataHighway.
