Barclays: chairman to retire, Rothschild exec taking over

(CercleFinance.com) - Barclays has named Rothschild's Nigel Higgins as its next chairman on Friday, replacing John McFarlane, who will retire in May 2019.

Aged 58, Higgins is currently deputy chairman of Paris-based investment bank Rothschild. He was the first non-family member to lead the group.

He has spent his entire career at Rothschild, joining the company as a graduate in 1982, Barclays said.

McFarlane will step down as a director and as chairman of Barclays at the end of Barclays' AGM on 2 May 2019, at which point Higgins will take charge.

Barclays has said that Higgins will join its board as a non-executive director on 1 March 2019.
