Tesco: pledges to remove excess plastic from its business

(CercleFinance.com) - British supermarket group Tesco has vowed to remove non-recyclable and excess packaging plastic from products for sale in its UK stores by the end of 2020.

The company said it would remove one billion pieces from Tesco own-brand products by then. Tesco plans to remove small plastic bags, commonly used to pack fruit, vegetables and bakery items, and replace them with paper ones.

The retailer will also ban plastic trays from ready-to-eat meals, as well as forks and straws from snack pots and drinks cartons.

It will also remove 200 million pieces of plastic used to pack clothing and greetings cards.

Tesco said that it has already stopped offering carrier bags with online deliveries - a decision that is expected to stop 250 million bags being produced every year.
