Arkema: 'serious' situation at Crosby plant in Texas.
(CercleFinance.com) - Hurricane Harvey and the floods ravaging the US state of Texas have not spared the French chemist Arkema.
In Crosby, the group has a plant that produces liquid organic peroxides, particularly in the composition of plastic resins, polystyrene, PVC, etc. Since the peroxide refrigeration has been affected, the risk of fire and/or explosion is "real," says the group.
Arkema Inc. has said that the Crosby plant was closed on Friday, before the hurricane hit. Extreme rainfall hit the area, with about one metre of rainwater falling on the site on Monday afternoon. The Crosby site was therefore flooded and its power supply cut off.
Yesterday afternoon, the plant's situation "became serious," says Arkema Inc. All the personnel were evacuated, as well as the surrounding population within a 1.5 mile (2.4 km) radius authorities said.
