EDF: Nam achieves social and environmental objectives
(CercleFinance.com) - EDF group today announces that in its latest assessment report, the Panel of International Experts (POE) responsible for monitoring the hydroelectric dam, Nam Theun 2, noted that it reached its targets in terms of social and environmental support.
"The provisions of the Concession Agreement relating to the resettlement program have been successfully met and recommends the closure of the Resettlement Implementation Period," EDF says.
These targets are part of a social and environmental program implemented by the government of Laos and Nam Theun 2 Power Company. "It included a comprehensive public health program, a development plan for the 100,000-people living downstream, the creation of the largest Biodiversity Protection Area of Laos (4,000 km2) and the Resettlement Program for the 6,300 inhabitants of Nakai District who were directly affected by the impoundment of the 490 km2 reservoir," EDF adds, which is one of the founders of Nam Theun 2 Power Company, which is responsible for designing, building and operating the Nam Theun 2 hydro-electric dam.
