Bayer: US jury awards 2 billion dollars in Roundup lawsuit
(CercleFinance.com) - A California jury awarded over 2 billion dollars on Monday to a couple who claimed that their cancers were linked to Monsanto's Roundup, in another major legal setback for the German chemical giant Bayer.
Bayer said that it will appeal against the verdict, noting that the decision contradicts a US Environmental Protection Agency review last month.
The company also cited a "consensus" among health regulators that glyphosate-based products can be used safely and that glyphosate is not carcinogenic, based on 40 years of scientific research.
Bayer recently disclosed that the number of lawsuits in the US in the glyphosate litigation has reached 13,400.
The Bayer shares were falling 3.2% this morning in Frankfurt. They have lost 42% of their value since the first glyphosate verdict in August 2018.
