Volkswagen: works on ultra-wideband technology with NXP
(CercleFinance.com) - Volkswagen has been working with NXP Semiconductors on a concept car that embeds ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, a radio communication method that improves security, safety and convenience in vehicles, the two groups said on Tuesday.
In automotive, ultra-wideband technology allows new use cases, such as automated trailer hitch activation, automated valet parking, hands-free parking, and drive-through payment, the companies said.
Another application is walking pattern recognition for car access, which was demonstrated in the VW concept car.
Combining high-precision sensing with artificial intelligence, the UWB car key is able to learn personal gestures for easy opening of the vehicle doors.
It can also verify that child seats have been properly installed.
However, Volkswagen said that the most important application that it sees is in theft protection.
The German auto group said that the technology will be seen in volume Volkswagen car models, as from this year.
