BMW: hits 2019 sales record, but lags Mercedes-Benz
(CercleFinance.com) - BMW reported record sales last year, thanks to strong demand for its sport-utility vehicles, but was still outsold by Mercedes-Benz on the luxury car market segment.
Sales of BMW brand models rose by 2% to almost 2.17 million passenger cars and SUVs in 2019, the Munich-based carmaker said on Friday.
This compares with a 1.3% gain to 2.34 million at rival Mercedes-Benz, which thereby boasts the top spot in luxury-car sales for the past year.
BMW said that deliveries were fueled by its new and revised BMW X SUV model line, with sales up 21% to 958,732 vehicles.
BMW posted a 1.1% drop in December deliveries to 196,116 vehicles.
The German carmaker said, however, that it expects to grow sales in the year 2020 through its model offensive, targeting a "slight increase" in group sales this year.
