Novartis: program for sickle cell anemia in Africa
(CercleFinance.com) - Novartis and its partners have announced the expansion of the sickle cell anemia program in East Africa with the signing of two new memoranda of understanding with the Ministries of Health in Uganda and Tanzania.
The program continues to make progress in Ghana with more than 2,000 patients treated with hydroxyurea in 11 treatment centres across the country.
Novartis plans to roll out the program in a total of 10 African countries by 2022.
About 1,000 children in Africa are born every day with this disease, over half of whom could die before the age of five.
