McDonald's: profit edges up, helped by '3 D's'

(CercleFinance.com) - McDonald's said third-quarter earnings rose 10%, helped by digital, delivery and drive-through, which the fast-food giant refers to as "the 3 D's".

McDonald's said it earned nearly 1.8 billion dollars, or 2.35 dollars a share, in the last quarter, up from 1.6 billion dollars, or 2.11 dollars a share, a year earlier.

Revenue fell by 2% at 5.4 billion dollars as global comparable sales declined 2.2%, the company said.

Yet, US comparable sales jumped 4.6% in the quarter, driven by strong average check growth from larger group orders, as well as strong performance at the dinner daypart, McDonald's said.

The company said it strategic marketing investments and promotional activity in particular drove low double-digit comparable sales for the month of September.

However, comparable guest counts remained negative for the quarter, it added.
