GE: buys Swedish healthcare start-up

(CercleFinance.com) - GE said on Friday that its healthcare unit has agreed to buy Prismatic Sensors, a Swedish start-up specializing in photon-counting detectors, an emerging technology with the potential to change x-ray imaging.

GE Healthcare said that photon counting technology has the potential to further expand the clinical capabilities of traditional computed tomography, likely becoming the standard of care for clinical applications such as oncology, cardiology, and neurology.

The company pointed out that photon counting allows the minute details of organ structures to be viewed, and improved tissue characterization at lower radiation dose

GE Healthcare - which has had a minority stake in the company since 2017 - expects to close the Prismatic Sensors acquisition by January 2021.

The companies said they will work together to deliver a clinical system in the near future.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
