In concrete terms, it should be understood that the "metaverse" is a virtual, fictional world in which it will be possible to immerse oneself, whether through a virtual reality headset or via the Internet of Things.

In the metaverse, you can do almost anything you can imagine - get together with friends and family, work, learn, play, shop, create - in addition to completely new experiences, Mark Zuckerberg says.

He is already promising instant teleportation in the form of a hologram, virtual presence at the office, at a concert... Think about how many physical things you have today that could be holograms in the future, he continues.

Our hope is that over the next decade, the metaverse will reach a billion people, host hundreds of billions of dollars of digital commerce and support jobs for millions of creators and developers, he adds.

Facebook shares were up just over 1% in early trading in New York today.
