Apple: EU authorises planned takeover of Shazam

(CercleFinance.com) - The European Commission has approved Apple's proposed takeover of Shazam.

The Commission concluded that the deal would not affect competition in the European Economic Area or a substantial part of it.

Apple operates "Apple Music," which is the second largest streaming music service in Europe (Spotify is the largest).

Shazam operates the musical recognition app that is the most used in the European Economic Area, as well as on a global scale.

Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, in charge of competition policy, said: "Data is key in the digital economy. We must therefore carefully review transactions which lead to the acquisition of important sets of data, including potentially commercially sensitive ones, to ensure they do not restrict competition. After thoroughly analysing Shazam's user and music data, we found that their acquisition by Apple would not reduce competition in the digital music streaming market."
