(CercleFinance.com) - Swedish telecom operator Telia has picked Nokia and Ericsson to build its new 5G high-speed wireless network, with the carrier already planning to cover 20 cities with 5G in the fourth quarter.

Nokia said on Wednesday that it has been selected by Telia as the exclusive provider of 5G equipment in Finland as part of a five-year deal which includes the modernisation of legacy networks, covering 7,500 sites.

The Finnish gear maker has also been chosen as the supplier of 5G standalone (SA) core in Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden in the Nordic and Baltic regions, it said.

Meanwhile, Ericsson will deploy Telia's next-generation 5G networks in Sweden and Estonia by 2025, the company said.

Ericsson shares were up 7% on Wednesday as the company reported solid quarterly results, while Nokia shares were down 1.3%.
