Ericsson: ups forecasts ahead of 5G

(CercleFinance.com) - Ericsson announced on Tuesday that it has raised its demand forecasts for fifth generation (5G) mobile telephony, which is expected to be driven by the current health crisis.

In the latest edition of its mobility report, the Swedish telecom equipment maker thus raises its estimate for the number of 5G subscriptions to 2.8 billion by 2025, compared with a previous forecast of 2.6 billion in its November 2019 edition.

Ericsson says it is basing its findings on the results of a recent study showing that one third of consumers are considering investing in a 5G connection and improving the internet speed of their homes in preparation for a potential "second wave" of the coronavirus epidemic.

Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks, Ericsson, said, “The spread of COVID-19 has prompted people all over the world to change their daily lives and, in many cases, work or study from home.”

"This has led to a rapid shift of network traffic from business to residential areas," he added.
