Airbus: Contract awarded for FORUM satellite

(CercleFinance.com) - Airbus has announced that it has been awarded a 160 million euro contract for the European Space Agency's (ESA) Far-infrared Outgoing Radiation Understanding and Monitoring (FORUM) satellite, which will measure the heat emitted by the Earth in space.


FORUM will be the first satellite to observe the Earth in the far-infrared part of the spectrum, providing unique measurements of the energy given off by the planet to help improve understanding of the climate system.

Measurements from FORUM's spectrometer will enable scientists to compile a high-resolution view of the Earth's greenhouse effect and learn more about ice clouds and water vapour in the atmosphere.

Airbus is the prime contractor for the mission and OHB is providing the instrument. The 883 kg FORUM satellite will be placed in a polar orbit at an altitude of 830 km and is scheduled to be launched on a Vega-C launcher from Kourou, French Guiana, in 2027.
