bp: starts gas production at India's deepest field

(CercleFinance.com) - Production at Asia's deepest offshore gas field, which is located at a water depth of over 2000 metres, started on Friday, bp said, in a move that will help reduce India's dependence on imported gas.

Indian conglomerate Reliance and bp today announced the start of production from the R Cluster, an ultra-deep-water gas field located off the east coast of India.

As part of the deal, Reliance and bp are developing three deepwater gas projects in the block, which together are expected to meet around 15% of India's gas demand by 2023.

At peak, production from the three fields is expected to be about 25% of India's domestic production, they said.

Reliance is the operator of the block, with a 66.7% stake while bp holds a 33.3% participating interest.
